Periodontics
Periodontics is the treatment of disease of the gums and surrounding bone. Standard periodontal care is arranged in phases.
Phase 1: Care includes examination and diagnosis of periodontal disease followed by root planing and soft tissue curettage. Many times this phase will utilize microbial testing and antimicrobial care. This care includes systemic antibiotics as well as antibacterial irrigation of the periodontium.
Phase 2: Care includes the reevaluation of the patient to determine the best course of care for the patient. This includes either placement on a maintenance program (cleanings every 3-4 months) versus periodontal surgical intervention.
Modern periodontal surgery includes surgery of the bone and soft tissues surrounding the teeth, soft tissue grafting, and bone grafting procedures to repair defects and placement of dental implants. The continued maintenance of the periodontal tissues is critical to prevent the return of this disease process.
Endodontics
Endodontics is the treatment of infections and disease of the pulp of the tooth.
Modern endodontics relies upon microscopic removal of diseased tissue, shaping of the internal anatomy of the tooth and placement of inert sealants into the root canal. Because of advances in endodontics, most patients can retain teeth that would otherwise need to be removed.
A second area of endodontics, surgical endodontics, allows for treatment of the infected tooth when the standard approach is not possible.
Following endodontic care, most teeth will need a crown to help protect and strengthen the tooth.
